Where Have All the Big Snakehead Gone?

This year's snakehead season in Maryland has been unlike anything I've experienced in recent years.

Winter seemed to last much longer than usual, and then summer arrived almost overnight. During early spring, anglers across Maryland and nearby waters were consistently spotting and catching northern snakehead. In fact, it felt like one of the strongest early-season bites we've had in quite some time.

Everything changed shortly after the spawning season. By late June and early July, many of the larger snakehead that had been easy to spot during the spawn suddenly became much harder to find. It wasn't just that they became less aggressive—they seemed to disappear altogether.

My first thought was that the growing popularity of bowfishing might be putting more pressure on the local population. With more anglers targeting snakehead every year, it seemed like a reasonable explanation.

But the more I thought about it, the less convincing that theory became. If bowfishing were the primary reason, I would expect the decline to happen gradually throughout the season. Instead, large fish were still highly visible during the spawn and then seemed to vanish almost immediately afterward.

That has led me to another possibility.

This year's unusual weather may have changed where snakehead spend their summer. A longer winter followed by a rapid increase in temperature could have altered water temperatures, vegetation growth, dissolved oxygen levels, or forage distribution, causing larger fish to relocate into areas that anglers simply aren't targeting as often.

Of course, this is only a personal observation—not a scientific conclusion. Every season is different, and many factors could be influencing fish behavior. Still, the change has been significant enough that I felt it was worth sharing with the community.

I'm curious whether other anglers in Maryland or neighboring states have noticed the same pattern. Have the big snakehead disappeared from your usual spots this summer, or have they simply moved somewhere else?

I'd love to hear your thoughts. Feel free to leave a comment and share what you've been seeing on the water this season.
